Bruxa Out for a bit Jul 20, 2007 8:46 AM Hey sorry I haven't posted for a while. I've had some crazy news and I'm busy pretending to be a grown up. My brother has been told that his unit in the Marine Corp will probably be called up for active duty and that they will most likely be going to Iraq. He's 19 and I crazy nervous for him. I remember 19 and I promise my rational thinking brain was definitely not all there. It's not all there now, I'm just old enough to know it. If I had any advise or "wisdom" for a younger person, it would be that time does make you more aware of just how "unwise" you are sometimes. Please keep my brother in your thoughts. I'm also the president of a local community service organization and I've been called back from cyberspace for a bit. I'm working on my next post and I'll put it up some time this weekend! Hope everyone is having a great week and it continues through the weekend! Til next time ~ Bruxa Have a Great Weekend!
Bruxa Color in Minimalism? Jul 10, 2007 10:48 AM Hvnly34 posed a excellent question to me in one of my earlier posts ~Question Bruxa: Is minimalism about simplicity in structure and neutral colors or can the structure be simple, but the color be bright (but still solid)? I have to be honest, this was a hard one for me. I love color and don't think we wear it enough, but the minimalist in me is drawn to darker and more neutral tones. Love me the nude color scheme! *wink* But does color especially bright color have a place in minimalism. My initial gut reaction was "OF COURSE!" But then like any good debater, I had to then back that statement up! So...... I had to get to thinking.... I'm a huge collector of magazines, much to my husband's chagrin! And most of what I've collected, has more of the neutral spin to it. I have to say looking through my stuff, media today loves either neutral minimalism or over-the-top maximalism. Can't say that I've ever notice that before. But then I remembered a few years ago, reading an article in the July 2003 Architectural Digest with a look I absolutely adored! (this remembering old magazine articles is exactly why I can't throw any magazines away, I remember them and if by chance I have culled them from my collection, I miss them  I LOVE this look Notice in these pictures, minimalism DOES NOT need to be SIMPLE! Minimalism can be complex - but never over done- it is always just enough. It also doesn't have to be exclusively modern (though I admit a bias to it's clean lines!) I love the way women did color in the 50's and 60's! Here are a few pictures from the February 1954 Women's Day magazine. I apologize in advance for the quality of the scanned photos but I was simply not willing to sacrifice them to the alter of blogging just yet! These are not by for the best examples of use of color in the 50's, but I loved the use of bright colors for an otherwise everyday use. These were meant to be everyday house dresses for an everyday housewife. Dresses that she made herself. And I happen to know these were used because my grandmother was the one who gave me the pattern having made them for herself in the day. I've made some for myself and know it's an easy pattern to just "whip out". And who can forget, Mrs. Kennedy's use of color, but minimal nature of her clothing. Her contribution to the beautiful early 60's. And finally a realistic use of color and minimalism, I'm added some pictures of a friends house, whose taste I've always admired. Southern women sure can use color, (I know I know, I'm showing a completely unfounded cultural bias. It is of course totally untrue!) So while my taste may schew towards this verion of minimalism Zachary House, Louisiana I promise to include color as an element of importance in this blog! Til next time ~Bruxa
Bruxa Minimalism in the movies Jul 8, 2007 11:06 AM Minimalism is an elegant "character" in two of my favorite movies, A Perfect Murder and Gattaca. In both movies, it's used in wardrobe and scenery to add texture to the film. In A Perfect Murder, Gwyneth Paltrow's clothing is spectacular array of luxury basics that any fashionista would love to own. But however gorgeous her wardrobe, it takes 2nd place to the incredible scenery of the Upper East Side of New York and the luxury minimalism of their pent house apartment. The opulence of the apartment is a distraction from the "emptiness of the onscreen marriage. It's too styled, too perfect, too for show. Now the real star photos courtesy of www.aperfectmurder.warnerbros.com Gorgeous. I'll do Gattaca in my next post. Til next time ~ Bruxa
Bruxa The Miller Sisters Jul 6, 2007 11:48 AM The Miller Sisters doing Minimalism Luxe
Bruxa Minimalism Luxe Jul 6, 2007 11:40 AM Ahh the famous Miller Sisters. They are just about as rich as cream gets and I think the middle sister, Marie-Chantal, has given a good deal to the minimalist look. Of course, it's WAY out of my price range! She has a good children's clothing line at www.mariechantal.com that I take idea from for my own children. I love the way a child looks in classical kids clothing. The brood at MC's children's line fashion show courtesy of www.mariechantal.com A summer look I love how clean and young this looks on MC and Alexandra They also have a flair for some great luxe items that without thier special would look overboard. I mean a princess can get away with fur trim being called minimalism, right?! Well if not I still think it's beautiful. I'll put a few more pics in an album y'all to look at. Til next time ~ Bruxa
